Turner’s viewpoint for this sketch was the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top of the Spanish Steps, looking north-west towards gardens and buildings on the Pincian Hill. The building dominating the right-hand side of the composition is the Villa Medici, which since 1803 has been the home of the French Academy in Rome. In inscription on folio 97 (D16870; Turner Bequest CXCIII 96) the artist compares the effects of wandering in the gardens of the Villa Medici at night to that of a painting by Claude Lorrain.
