This page contains advice to Turner on travelling in Italy in preparation for the artist’s first tour of the country in 1819. The author of the inscription is James Hakewill (1778–1843), with whom Turner collaborated on the engraved print project, Picturesque Tour of Italy, published 1820 (see the introduction to the sketchbook). The text was first transcribed by Finberg,1 and is repeated here with minor variations:
good map of the environs of | Rome – | In going to Naples, stop for a | day at Mola di Gaeta and | go to Gaeta for the picturesque | buildings. The Inn at Mola | di Gaeta is sufficiently good.
Hakewill’s comments lead on from folio 15 (D13885) and continue on folio 17 (D13889). The suggestions are based upon his travels to Italy in 1816–17 and a view of Mola di Gaeta can be found amidst his drawings from the time (British School at Rome Library).2 For Turner’s sketches meanwhile see the Gandolfo to Naples sketchbook (Tate D15609; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 27) and the Naples, Paestum, Rome sketchbook (Tate D16035; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 64).
