At Foligno, the route to Rome joined the Via Flaminia and continued south towards Spoleto. The two sketches on this page chart stages of Turner’s journey towards the Temple of the Clitumnus near Pissignano. The upper view is a distant prospect of Trevi, a town on the crest of a hill, with the campanile of the Cathedral of Sant’Emiliano. The bottom half of the page is devoted to the approach towards Pissignano, a medieval fortress built on the hillside above the ancient Temple of Clitumnus. There is also a very rough thumbnail sketch of a distant view of the temple in the top right-hand corner. For a detailed discussion see folio 37 verso (D14725).
Additionally, there are some decorative architectural details on this page which Turner has labelled ‘Foligno’. These have been drawn with the sketchbook held vertically as a notebook. It is not known to what they relate.
