Inscribed by Turner in ink (see main catalogue entry) on off-white wove paper, 187 x 118 mm
 
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The inscriptions were thought by Finberg not to be in Turner’s hand, but seem to be autograph. Spencer-Longhurst associates these and other similar written inside the back cover (D40614) with the dates on which Turner used the sketchbook, but more probably they relate to his finances. They read as follows:
