For Hindhead see comments to folio 21 of this sketchbook (D06539; Turner Bequest C 20). Here the turnpike road is indicated by a sweep of the pencil while vertical marks on the summit of the hill on the right depict a famous gibbet, erected in 1787 for the execution of three men who had murdered a sailor. Turner’s verses on Hindhead inside the back cover (D40615) refer to this in their exhortation to ‘Hark the kreaking Irons’.
