See Introduction to the sketchbook for Ruskin’s misdating of this sketch in the National Gallery displays to ‘Turner’s period of development (1775–1800)’. Here the stranded vessel, probably the same as in the preceding sketch on folio 1 (D05428), has lost her mast and evidently begun to break up as wreckage swirls in the surf around her; figures are climbing on her hull.
