The manor house, on the Gibside estate1 about a mile north-east of the Column of British Liberty, is seen to the south above the Derwent Valley at Goodshields Haugh, from a similar viewpoint on Winlaton Scar as in the more detailed two-page view towards Gibside running across the verso of the present leaf and folio 10 recto (D12267, D12268; CLVI 5a–6).

Technical notes:
Ruskin’s inscription at the bottom left has been obscured by the stub to which the page was attached when this considerably disrupted book was rebound (see the introduction to the sketchbook). In full it presumably read ‘554 A’, corresponding to his number ‘554.B’ on folio 10 verso (D12269; CLVI 6a), relating the halves of the two-page drawing referred to above. There are pairs of rough pencil strokes running into the gutter towards the top and bottom of the left-hand side. These also appear at the corresponding points on folio 10 verso, and presumably date from the detachment of these leaves, perhaps as indications as to where they should be joined to form a continuous item for display.
