This sketch includes selected features of the west front of Hylton Castle and its adjacent chapel in a lightly indicated, wooded landscape. The castellation, machicolation and fenestration of the castle are kept to the minimum necessary, only being indicated in any detail on the left-hand side of the castle’s façade. The north and south wings have since been demolished, and the chapel is without its tower and roof. There are details of the buildings and their setting from the opposite side on folios 11 verso and the recto of the present leaf (D12273, D12274; CLVI 8a, 9), and a view of from the north-west on folio 13 recto opposite (D12276). See the entry for the latter and the introduction to the tour for more on the history of the site.
Technical notes:
There are two small, adventitious strokes or dabs of red pigment at the bottom left corner, possibly by-products of the watercolour derived from the sketch on the opposite page.
