The upper and lower views on the left-hand two-thirds of the page are from similar viewpoints, looking north-west to the castle, with the flagpole above Bulmer’s Tower in each case at the nearest angle of the building. They are divided by a horizontal pencil line. The Barnard Castle-Bishop Auckland Road runs north-south about a quarter of a mile east of the castle. To the right, divided from the two horizontal compositions by vertical lines, is a study of trees which appears to be a continuation of the view of the castle on folio 25 verso (D12283; CLVI 14).
As now bound and foliated, sketches of the castle and its surroundings fill most of the second half of the sketchbook, from folio 17 recto (D12298; CLVI 22a) to folio 32 recto (D12309; CLVI 28).
