Technical notes:
As is evident from the title associated with ‘Page ...28a’ in the 1909 Inventory, there has been confusion in the numbering of this page, symptomatic of the previous fragmentary state of the sketchbook (see the introduction). The description ‘Hilly landscape with houses’ seems instead applicable to the page now bound as folio 15 recto (D40764), and this issue is discussed further in its catalogue entry.
