The subject is enclosed in a ruled pencil margin. As in the study of Petworth Church (Tate D00379; Turner Bequest XXIII E), the use of grey and blue washes here demonstrates Turner’s interest in the techniques of Michael ‘Angelo’ Rooker; see Tate D00193, D00192 (Turner Bequest XVII R, Q).
