This study in the rendering of masonry is copied from Battle Abbey-gate, Sussex, by Michael ‘Angelo’ Rooker (1746–1801), shown at the Royal Academy in 1792 (438), and now in the Academy’s London collection. See also Tate D00192 (Turner Bequest XVII Q).
The inscription may refer to Aaron Arrowsmith (1750–1823), ‘geographer’, proprietor of a shop first in Rathbone Place, then from 1790 in Long Acre, Covent Garden. See Tate D00153 (Turner Bequest XIII H). There are colour tints in the margin round the drawn area.
