Joseph Mallord William Turner ?A River Landscape with a Large Tree 1791

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
?A River Landscape with a Large Tree 1791
D40032
Pencil on white wove paper, 231 x 294 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pen and brown ink ‘View on the River’ (smudged) towards top centre and ‘View on the River Avon near Bristol | Wm Turner’ above centre
Stamped in black ink with Turner Bequest monogram above ‘VII G’ bottom left
Inscribed in a later hand ‘11¼ x 8¾’ top left, upside down
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
As in the case of the view of The Avon near Wallis’s Wall (Tate D00109; Turner Bequest VII B), this inscription has been tried twice: Turner was anxious to write out his title carefully, but did not mind the erasure. It refers to the subject on the recto (D00114; Turner Bequest VII G).
The slight pencil sketch is difficult to read, but seems to show a river landscape with a large tree.
