The ‘X’ at the beginning of the fourth line is in brush and grey colour, also employed for the scoring through of the last four digits and the addition of ‘Car’ or ‘Cas’. The ‘X’ and ‘Tur’ in the fifth line are in pencil, as are those in the last line.
This list gives the denominations and numbers of bank notes. Finberg considered the handwriting to be that of Turner’s father. The notes may have been received as a result of the sale of stock1 (see also the introduction to the present sketchbook). The names appended to some entries, however, are those of associates of Turner in the topographical work he was engaged on from about 1794.
