The wheel is probably part of the machinery of a mill; a similar object appears in Turner’s drawing of Marford Mill, made in the course of the Midland tour (Tate D00339; Turner Bequest XXI L). The carousel was perhaps observed at Wolverhampton; see folio 9 recto (D00270).
