St Woolos, dedicated to the early Welsh saint Gwynllyw (the present name being a corruption of this), has at various periods been Metropolitan Cathedral of Wales, and serves that function today. Turner has included in his view over the estuary of the Usk only the striking arched porch on the south side of the church. A drawing of Newport Castle, from which a finished watercolour was derived, is in the South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00555; Turner Bequest XXVI 3).
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
