Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg tentatively identified the building as the chapel of St Cross, Winchester; C.F. Bell recognised it as Romsey Abbey. The foundation dates from the tenth century, and much of the present structure is of the twelfth. The building stands isolated from the town, very much as Turner shows it here.
