This distinctively shaped hill seems to be the feature recorded in Turner’s small watercolour, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, of Craig y Voel1 inscribed by the artist ‘Craggy Voyle near the River Ellen’ and ‘near Rhaidder’ (see the introductory remarks to this section). The details of cottages and broken fencing in the foreground are repeated with variations in the watercolour. The Elan Valley is now the site of reservoirs for the City of Birmingham, and the land round the foot of Craig y Voel is flooded, with a dam to the right of this view.

Technical notes:
The watermark is continuous with the ‘GR’ on Tate D00139 (Turner Bequest XII L), which is the other half of the original sheet.
