See also Tate D00141 and D00142 (Turner Bequest XII L, M). Finberg suggested1 that the subject could be the Clydach Falls near Crickhowell, or alternatively a fall on the River Mynach. Because Turner went to the trouble of colouring part of the subject, it is possible that this is in some sense preparatory for the lost watercolour exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1792, Second Fall of the River Monach [i.e. Mynach], Devil’s Bridge, Cardiganshire;2 see Tate D00137 and D00138 (Turner Bequest XII H, I).
