This sheet may be part of a larger one. The grand conception of the composition, together with the presence of a figure dwarfed by the scale of the rocks, suggests that Turner may have thought of using the drawing as the basis for a watercolour. However, Finberg gives Turner’s inscription as ‘First Fall, Monack’, whereas the lost watercolour exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1792 was titled Second Fall of the River Monach [i.e. Mynach], Devil’s Bridge, Cardiganshire.1 See Tate D00138 (Turner Bequest XII I).
