Inscribed by the artist in pencil ‘6 ½’ top centre and ‘walls of [?Plo...]’ right-hand side of top sketch. Also ‘10’ and ‘27 | Mole [?as] [?shield]’ within middle sketch.
Inscribed by an unknown hand in pencil ‘9 P 1 – 10 –’ centre right, parallel with right-hand edge
Stamped in black ‘CXCII’ top right, descending right-hand edge
 
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner has used the inside front cover of this sketchbook to make a number of rough sketches of various subjects including a boat (top right), a couple of landscape compositions depicting a lake or bay, and a distant view of a city from the ‘walls’. The location of the latter is currently unidentified although it bears the appearance of being in Italy.
