The subject of this sketch is the Casa or Palazzo degli Omenoni, a sixteenth-century palace in Milan. The building stands in present-day Via degli Omenoni, at the back of the Church of San Fedele, and is so called after the eight large male caryatids by sculptor Antonio Abondio (1538–1591) which adorn the façade (omenoni means ‘great men’ in Italian). Turner’s drawing represents a partial study of the ground and first floor of the palace including the main entrance with its flanking statues.
