This page contains two, or perhaps three sketches of mountainous landscapes related to Turner’s return journey through Savoy in January 1820. The precise locations have not been conclusively identified although Turner has noted the position of the River ‘Isère’ in the lower prospect and this suggests that these are views seen from the road travelling westwards between Aiguebelle and Montmélian. The ruined tower or castle visible at the bottom may be the same building represented in another sketch from the Paris, France, Savoy 2 sketchbook (Tate D14118; Turner Bequest CLXXIII 77).
