This sketch depicts Trofarello, a small town approximately five miles south of Turin, which Turner passed through en route to Montecalieri (see folio 17, Tate D14176; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 16). Visible in the centre of the drawing is the campanile of an eighteenth-century church, the Chiesetta di San Giuseppe. Turner’s viewpoint is from the east and visible in the distance are the distant Alps.
