This page contains two separate but related sketches. The larger drawing represents part of a wider landscape composition continued on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 15 verso (D14173; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 14a). The view depicted is that of the town of Moncalieri from the east, and visible on this sheet is the distinctive silhouette of the Castello Reale, a residence of the ruling house of Savoy. Dominating the background are the massive peaks of the French Alps. Also on the page, in the bottom right-hand corner, is a separate, smaller study, also depicting a general view of Moncalieri from the east, with the Po river winding its way to the south.
For a more detailed study of the Castello Reale and a list of further views of Moncalieri see folio 17 (D14176; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 16).
