The subject of the sketch is a view of the Piazza San Carlo in Turin and, as Turner’s inscription in the bottom right-hand corner indicates, the artist’s viewpoint is the corner of the square which intersects with the Contrada di San Filippo, a street now known as Via Maria Vittoria. This side of the drawing includes figures standing beside a covered market stall.
