This page contains three distinct sketches. The two uppermost studies represent variant views of the Duomo (cathedral) of Como. The drawing in the top left-hand corner, parallel with the left-hand edge of the sketchbook, depicts the side of the building from the south (from a point on present-day Vittorio Emanuele II), while that in the top right-hand corner represents a more general view from seen from the waters of Lake Como to the north. A related prospect can be seen on folio 62 verso–63 (D14262–D14263; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 61a–62). For a more detailed study and a general description of the Duomo see folio 63 verso (D14265; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 62a).
Federico Crimi has identified the subject of the bottom view as the gulf of Como, seen from the lake.1 For further sketches of Lake Como see folio 48 (D14234; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 47).
