Turner’s expedition to the Simplon Pass in the Swiss Alps took him through the town of Crevoladossola. This page contains two sketches pertaining to the town. At the top of the page is a view looking north towards the town’s parish church, the Chiesa Santi Pietro e Paolo with the mountains rising beyond. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the page, parallel with the spine of the sketchbook, is part of the view of the bridge at Crevoladossola. The composition has spilled over from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 82 verso (D14305; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 81a).
For a general discussion of Turner’s journey to the Simplon Pass see the introduction to the sketchbook, and also the introduction to the Passage of the Simplon sketchbook (Tate, Turner Bequest CXCIV).
