After visiting St-Cloud, Turner retraced his steps and followed the River Seine back to Paris. The route took him through Sèvres, a town just south of St-Cloud, famous for its porcelainware. The Pont de Sèvres, a stone bridge built by Napoleon, appears in a number of sketches (see for example folio 5, D14099), but here the artist appears to be standing on the bridge and looking south-east towards the Île Seguin, a small island on the Seine between Sèvres and Bolougne-Billancourt.1 The island is shown connected to both towns by wooden bridges. A comparable view can be seen in the Dieppe, Rouen and Paris sketchbook of 1821 (Tate D24540; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 21a). For further sketches of Sèvres and St-Cloud see folio 12 (D14011).

During the twentieth century, the island was home to the Renault car factory which closed in 1992.
