This sketch depicts a mountainous landscape with a road and a building at the centre of the composition. The drawing is too rough to be conclusively identified, and the inscription is hard to decipher but it is likely to depict a view from the ascent to the Pass of Mont Cenis in the French Alps. For a more detailed discussion of the Mont Cenis pass and Turner’s related Alpine sketches see the Introduction to the sketchbook.
