This page contains four distinct sketches which probably all represent views on the River Saône near Trévoux, see folio 39 (D14052). The precise locations are currently unidentified. Turner has annotated the sketch in the top left-hand corner with the note ‘cattle in the water’, a pastoral motif which perhaps reminded him of the work of the seventeenth-century French master, Claude Lorrain (c.1604/5–1682), whose landscapes Turner greatly admired.
