The subject of this sketch is tentatively identified as Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d’Or, a village on the right bank of the River Saône, approximately ten miles north of Lyon. Turner’s viewpoint appears to be from the waters of the river looking south-west towards the ruined complex of a church and ruined château on the hill above the riverbank.
