This sketch depicts a vista looking across a mountainous valley from a high vantage point on steep, rocky slopes. There appears to be a small roadside monument or altar near the top right-hand corner. The precise location remains unidentified although it is likely to be somewhere in Savoy, on the road to the Mont Cenis pass. Part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 62 (D14090).
