This is the right half of a double-page spread continued from folio 38 verso opposite (D11505), recording the view from above Whitbarrow Lodge, south-west towards Castle Head, with the southern end of Whitbarrow Scar to the right, and panning right across the ‘Bog’ of Meathop Moss to Arnside Knott in the distance. Turner sketched similar material, but from more distant viewpoints, in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11189, D11188; Turner Bequest CXLV 94, 93a) which accompanied him on the tour of 1816. The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches in the area of Whitbarrow Scar and Witherslack to Tuesday 6 August 1816.
A sketch on the verso (D11507) is taken from the same viewpoint, but looking in the opposite direction.
