This is the left part of a double-page spread continued to the right on folio 15 recto (D11529; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 6, now bound opposite), recording the view north-west from the deer park of Dallam Tower, looking over the house to the Kent Estuary, with Whitbarrow Scar in the left distance, and Coniston Old Man at the extreme left and Kirkstone Fell dominating the centre distance. A sketch in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (D11499–D11500; Turner Bequest CXLVII 35a–36) shows much the same view across the Kent sands as seen from the shore. The present writer has dated these sketches to Monday 5 August 1816.
Dallam Tower was built in 1720 for Daniel Wilson, MP for Westmorland, and remains the private home of his descendants.
Technical notes:
Finberg did not notice the relationship of this page to his folio 6 (D11529), but this had been noticed and the book rebound accordingly, prior to the present writer’s 1984 book. The recto as now bound is blank, apart from being inscribed in pencil ‘CXLVIII 42a’.
