This leaf carries two panoramic views of York from the south-east. One forms the left portion of a double-page spread, continued to the right on folio 23 (D10910), opposite, and further to the right on the previous double-page, folios 21 verso–22 (D10907–D10908). The view is taken from near Foss Islands Road, and includes, from left to right across this spread: the central tower and east end of York Minster; the tower of St Cuthbert’s, Peasholme Green; and Layerthorpe Postern and Bridge. A second drawing across this page encompasses the whole panorama of York from the south-east, from a more distant and elevated viewpoint. Turner drew a similar, but still more extensive, panorama, elaborated to a much greater degree, in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook (Tate D11376–D11377; Turner Bequest CXLVI 3a–4).
