This sketch ( not noticed or numbered by Finberg) records a view of the interior of St Mary’s Abbey, York, taken from the south aisle, looking to the angle of the inside of the west end and north wall of the nave. The tower of St Olave’s Church can be seen through the window to the right, and a pedimented building on Marygate through the west portal shown in its entirety even though only a portion would have been visible from a single viewpoint. Turner sketched the same aspect of St Mary’s from more distant viewpoints in two preceding sketches in this sketchbook, folios 24 verso–25 (D19013–D10914) and also on folio 28 verso (D10920); and sketched the exterior of the west end in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook (Tate D11378; Turner Bequest CXLVI 5).
