This sketch depicts Verres in the Val d’Aosta, looking towards the convent of St Gilles, with the fort beyond. Turner sketched similar subjects in this sketchbook (D29298, D29303; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 47, 49a). The former shows the time on the clock as 12.35; here it shows 1.45.
