The fort sketched here, overlooking a wide valley, is perhaps L’Esseillon in the Maurienne Valley. The sketch is very scrappy and evidently taken in haste, possibly from a moving coach. The inscription is unclear but perhaps reads ‘St Gus [?]’. The site may be the same is appears nearby in the sketchbook (D29342; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 69).
