This sketch of the Porta Praetoria at Aosta occupies a gap that evidently remained in a sequence of views of St Pierre entered in the sketchbook as a continuous series. Turner must have missed a page and then filled it in with this sketch soon afterwards. Other sketches hereabouts are from later in the tour when Turner was working on the blank versos.
