Here, Château d’Argent and Villeneuve are seen from the west, on the road to Introd. Turner painted a similar but distinct view in a watercolour of Chatel Argent and Villeneuve, Val d’Aosta (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh).1 This sketch includes a round tower, perhaps Roman, above Villeneuve seen elsewhere in this sketchbook (D29372, D29373; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 87, 88). The tower has now disappeared save for foundations, to be seen on the lower of two terraced mounds by the middle school at Villeneuve.
