Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
At the top of the page are a quick sketch of two jugs, a figure in Normandy costume and another of the figure’s hat. Turner expressed great interest during this tour of northern France in recording signs of local costume and custom.
At the bottom of the page, drawn with the sketchbook inverted, is a list of places just to the south of Paris that constitute either a route or, in combination with a rough outline, a map. From Paris Turner took a short tip to Arcueil to see the impressive Roman aqueduct. This note was either made as an aid to making his way there, or to indicate the route of the watercourse into the city.1 There are sketches of Arcueil on folios 12, 12 verso and 13 verso (Tate D24522, D24523, D24525; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 12, 12a, 13a).
The inscription reads:
‘arcueil 3 d R

P.Montrouge
Montrouge Gentilly
Arcuel’
