Two of Turner’s labels are inscribed ‘Voreppe’. In the drawing, also inscribed ‘Voreppe’, Turner surveys the flat valley of the River Isère as it runs towards Grenoble. The Grande Aiguille rises on the left. For Voreppe, at the entrance to the Valley of Grenoble and where Turner perhaps stayed overnight in 1802 en route from Lyons, see, from this sketchbook, Tate D04515 and D04517; Turner Bequest LXXIV 22, 24.
Turner included ‘17 Between Voreppe and Chartreuse mountains’ in a list of French and Swiss subjects on the back of a random pencil sketch (Tate D08253; Turner Bequest CXX m).
