A label numbered, like this drawing, ‘31’ by John Ruskin is inscribed by Turner ‘Alps Vis a Vis de St Martin Savoy’ which would be right in general terms. However Ruskin applied his own more specific title ‘The Aiguillette from Magland’, evidently on comparison with the two watercolours of L’Aiguillette, Valley of Cluses from his collection (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina).1 These depict mountains also including La Croix de Fer, seen from Oex between Magland and Sallanches, as David Hill has shown.2
