This sketch is the continuation to the right of the previous double-page spread of the view west from Caley Crags (Tate D12009–D12010; Turner Bequest CLIII 9a-10), panning right to include more foreground rocks, and the distant valley of the Wharfe. The main sketch (D12010) served as the basis of a finished watercolour, Deer Shooting at Caley Crags (on the London art market in 2000),1 painted for Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall about 1818, but Turner does not seem to have referred to this continuation in devising the finished composition. The watercolour is cited as ‘22 Rocks West’ in the list of watercolours in hand (or intended) on another page of this sketchbook (D12013; Turner Bequest CLIII 11a).
