Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Written from right to left down the page, as if inside the back cover and continued on the inside front cover (D40818), opposite, Turner’s inscription reads:
‘Doth Phipp continues practice still
Or doth he quite [=quiet] lie
Neither replies [?] – the clamrous world
Pry in or probing others –
He acts since he ^now knows Howe
Either his ... ... smile
Or looks [at?] eyes against his will
Can Phipps retire from practice
Can [k]nown from influence
Doth Phipp eer hope to practice on
Credulity and British fair – pain’ 1
