Farnley Hall was the Yorkshire seat of Turner’s friend and patron Walter Fawkes. The indication of the house, and the profile of the land resembles that of Farnley as seen in sketches in the Hastings sketchbook (Tate D10406; Turner Bequest CXXXIX 40a) and the Large Farnley sketchbook (Tate D09056; Turner Bequest CXXVIII 40). These are taken from Great Dib on the West Chevin above Otley, but the present drawing appears to be from a lower viewpoint.
