This sketch records a view of the market town of Malton, about halfway between Scarborough and York. Turner’s viewpoint is to the west of the town on the terrace above the River Derwent, looking towards the Talbot Hotel in the centre, with the tower and spire of St Leonard’s Church beyond. The Talbot opened in 1740 to serve travellers between York and the coast. It continues to this day, and its prominence in Turner’s sketch possibly indicates that it was his accommodation on this occasion.
