Turner looks here to the north-west, through and over the South Gate from the present Southgate Street, to the castle and the tower of St Mary Magdalene’s Church. Across the valley in the distance between them is the tower of St Stephen’s Church, St Stephen-by-Launceston.
There is a sketchier study from a similar viewpoint in the Devon Rivers, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D09603; Turner Bequest CXXXII 113), probably used on the same occasion. For other views of Launceston Castle and the surrounding town, see under folio 70 recto (D09873; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 72).
