This cloud drawing is continued from folio 21 verso (D12153) and the recto of the subsequent torn stub (D40852), which masked the corresponding area of the present page nearest the gutter as Turner drew. As set out under folio 7 verso (D12134), there are nearly thirty pages of cloud studies in this sketchbook, some annotated with colours, as here, and other observations.
To the right of the drawing and partly overlapping with it, is the following note in pencil, written with the page turned vertically:
 1 Rood 26 poles       21
        20 £
       D[...]  [?the Ex]
Roods and poles are both measurements of area; the significance of the notes is as yet undetermined. There is another inscription featuring a ‘Rood’ on folio 28 recto (D12163; CLIV a 27).
